Finding the space between prospect status and established stardom.

The breakout screen starts with skaters age 25 or younger who carry at least 60 weighted games, 0.65 projected WAR, and a 48th-percentile overall rating in the current Wolff Analytics model. Players already projecting at 3.0 WAR—or with a substantial sample and a 90th-percentile WAR or overall rating—are tracked separately as established young stars.

The 0–100 breakout score is an index, not a literal probability. It weights projected impact (25%), offensive skill (20%), age runway (15%), experience runway (15%), recent offense and finishing momentum (15%), and overall NHL floor (10%). The purpose is to identify strong research candidates, not to replace role, health, or roster-context analysis.

Two calibration safeguards matter. First, a 0.65 projected-WAR floor prevents eye-catching skill percentiles from overwhelming weak projected impact. Second, “already established” requires elite impact plus meaningful experience rather than relying on a single overall percentile.

The list does not directly project points, awards, or a guaranteed role. Line assignment, power-play deployment, injuries, coaching changes, shooting regression, and roster openings can materially change the outcome. A lower-ranked player with a major opportunity gain can outperform a higher-ranked player whose path is blocked.

The next stage is contextual review and historical backtesting: testing what would have counted as a successful breakout in prior seasons, then adding opportunity variables before converting this board into player-specific production forecasts.

01 • Methodology

A projection of impact—not a subjective talent ranking.

WAR estimates a player’s total contribution relative to a replacement-level NHL skater. These rankings use Wolff Analytics’ current three-season weighted projection and require a minimum 50-game weighted sample. Players are assigned to their model-listed primary position, with left- and right-wing labels normalized across data sources.

The results are best read as a forecast of expected on-ice impact under the model—not a trophy ballot, trade-value ranking, or prediction of career value. Goaltenders are excluded because the current projected-WAR pipeline is built for skaters.

02 • Centers

Three superstars are separated by six hundredths of a win.

MacKinnon leads the entire model, but Draisaitl and McDavid are effectively alongside him. Crosby’s fifth decade of NHL life remains extraordinary: even after aging considerations, his recent impact keeps him fourth among centers. Jack Hughes is the youngest member of the group.

03 • Left wings

Robertson leads a deep and tightly packed group.

Jason Robertson moves to the top after the audit, followed by Panarin, Kaprizov, and Matthew Tkachuk. Ehlers’ balanced five-on-five profile keeps him sixth. Hyman remains a top-ten left wing, but age and availability regression move him from first to tenth.

04 • Right wings

Kucherov owns the clearest positional lead.

Kucherov is the only right wing above four projected wins. DeBrincat remains fourth after a deeper review of his 41-goal season and strong five-on-five expected-goal results. Caufield’s 51-goal breakout supports seventh, while age regression moves Patrick Kane outside the top ten.

Hughes and Bouchard form a distinct leading tier.

Quinn Hughes leads the position, with Bouchard comfortably second. Makar moves to third after the audit. Karlsson’s offensive value remains substantial, but age and defensive regression move him outside this top ten. Hutson is the youngest player in any positional ranking.

Montreal owns the model’s best blend of present strength and staying power.

The Canadiens finish first through an unusually complete profile: a high-end five-year NHL core, one of the league’s strongest calibrated pipelines, favorable control and flexibility, and strong future positional depth. Carolina and Buffalo complete the leading group through different combinations of proven value, control, and roster balance.

San Jose rises from 14th to ninth. Its league-leading pipeline now receives appropriate five-year weight, while NHL contributors with developing samples are included in the core with an uncertainty discount. Ottawa falls to 12th because its excellent young NHL core is offset by a bottom-quarter pipeline and weak 2025–26 goaltending. The Rangers fall to seventh: strong defense, Shesterkin, and future assets preserve a high floor, but imputed future contract costs and heavier external prospect calibration prevent missing salary data or small-sample ratings from overstating their position.

This is a positioning index—not a prediction of the next five Stanley Cup champions. Goaltending variance, injuries, development, trades, coaching, and playoff randomness can overwhelm even a strong organizational foundation.

The top ten reveal several different paths to a strong future.

Overall score weights five-year NHL core 25%, calibrated pipeline 30%, contract control and 2028 flexibility 20%, future positional balance 15%, and draft capital 10%. Category inputs are percentile-ranked across all 32 teams.

Strong today and strong tomorrow are different questions.

Teams in the upper-right combine an age-adjusted established core with a strong prospect pipeline. San Jose sits at the pipeline extreme; Chicago also moves substantially upward on the vertical axis after prospect information and external evaluations are incorporated consistently.

04 • Category profiles

No two leading organizations arrive the same way.

Montreal is the most complete profile in the leading group. Carolina dominates established value and control, Buffalo is the most positionally balanced, Philadelphia combines pipeline strength with draft capital, and New Jersey’s established core remains a major advantage.

Each raw category is converted to a percentile across the 32 NHL teams, limiting the influence of extreme outliers before the published weights are applied. Scores describe the model snapshot generated August 5, 2026.

06 • Limitations

Organizational futures change faster than player projections.

Draft-pick conditions, unsigned prospects, roster transactions, and incomplete contract records create more uncertainty than the player-level model. Prospect performance is translated from limited or non-NHL samples, while the goalie component uses team results rather than a full individual goalie projection. The index should be refreshed after major transactions and treated as a structured decision framework rather than an objective truth.

01 • Executive summary

The NHL is entering a different cap environment.

The league and NHLPA jointly announced upper limits of $95.5 million in 2025–26, $104 million in 2026–27, and $113.5 million in 2027–28. Those figures represent a sharp break from the flat-cap period and provide an unusually useful short-term forecasting anchor.

Our base case places the upper limit near $152.6 million in 2032–33 and $188.3 million in 2037–38. The estimate assumes the current burst of growth gradually moderates rather than continuing indefinitely. Because a ten-year point estimate would imply false precision, the project also publishes conservative and bullish paths.

02 • Methodology

Fixed anchors first, explicit assumptions after.

The three announced cap figures are treated as published anchors. Beginning in 2028–29, each scenario compounds a visible annual growth assumption from the $113.5 million base. Users can edit those assumptions directly in the downloadable workbook and see every downstream season update.

The base path begins at 7.5% growth as the league continues its near-term normalization, then steps down toward 4%. The conservative path slows from 4% toward 2.5%. The bullish path begins at 9% and remains above 5% through the forecast horizon. The model is intentionally formula-driven and does not conceal an unexplained “black box” estimate.

03 • Scenario outlook

A widening range is a feature, not a flaw.

The range grows from $5.7 million in 2028–29 to more than $68 million by 2037–38. That spread communicates how strongly compounding magnifies modest differences in long-term revenue assumptions.

Revenue—not contract inflation by itself—drives the ceiling.

Nominal AAVs will rise faster than intuition.

A 15% cap-share contract equals roughly $17.0 million at the 2027–28 ceiling, $22.9 million in the 2032–33 base case, and $28.2 million in 2037–38. Comparing contracts only by nominal AAV will therefore become increasingly misleading. Cap percentage, signing age, term, and the cap environment at signing all need to be evaluated together.

This is why Wolff Analytics’ contract projections are expressed in both AAV and cap share: future superstar deals can look unprecedented in dollars while remaining familiar in economic terms.

06 • Risks and limitations

This is a scenario model, not an official forecast.

Beyond 2027–28, the NHL and NHLPA have not announced the cap figures used here. Economic slowdowns, media disruption, Canadian-dollar weakness, changes to revenue definitions, labor negotiations, escrow mechanics, or major league expansion could move actual results materially away from every scenario.

The workbook should be used to test assumptions and understand sensitivity—not to claim certainty about a cap number ten years in advance.
